Escape Plans
One of the keys to surviving a house fire is having a
plan to get out.
Every family should have an escape plan. The escape
plan must be second nature, during a fire is not the time to learn
you’re escape plan. Practice you’re plan every six months
- Know two ways out of every room. The normal means of exiting a room, the door may be blocked by fire or heavy smoke. You must be prepared to go out a window. On the second floor you will need to have a rope ladder or other escape system available.
- Arrange in advance a meeting place outside the house.
- Plan in advance what you're going to do with a disabled person, infant or other person who will need help to exit the house.
- Practice you're escape plan so that you will be able to execute it in an emergency. Include some night drills. If you’re escape plan includes the use of an escape ladder practice deploying the ladder. During a fire the house may become filled with smoke, practice you're escape plan with you're eyes closed or while wearing a blindfold.
